Every Pastor Needs a Coach
Early in my ministry, I thought leadership was about figuring things out on my own. I believed if I just prayed harder, studied more, and worked longer hours, I’d grow into the leader God wanted me to be. But over time, I realized something: growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in relationship. That’s why coaching has been one of the most transformative forces in my life and ministry.
If you’re a pastor or leader, you know the weight of responsibility of leading in a local church. People look to you for wisdom, direction, and spiritual guidance. But who is pouring into you? Who is helping you grow, stretch, and lead at your highest level?
Coaching isn’t about fixing what’s broken—it’s about maximizing what’s already inside you.
Here’s why every pastor needs a coach:
1. Blind Spots Are Real
No matter how self-aware we think we are, we all have blind spots. A good coach helps you see what you can’t see on your own. Whether it’s an unhealthy leadership habit, a pattern of thinking that’s holding you back, or a subtle drift in your priorities, coaching brings clarity.
2. Leadership Is Lonely
Pastors are surrounded by people but often feel isolated. Who do you talk to when you’re struggling? Who do you confide in when you’re questioning your leadership? Coaching provides a safe space to process challenges, navigate transitions, and wrestle with big decisions.
3. Growth Doesn’t Happen by Accident
We expect our churches to have a discipleship plan, but what about our own growth? Coaching creates intentional space for reflection, goal-setting, and accountability. Without it, it’s too easy to get caught up in the demands of ministry and neglect our own development.
4. A Coach Pushes You Further
Left to ourselves, we tend to stay in our comfort zones. A coach challenges us to step out in faith, take risks, and embrace growth. They don’t just offer encouragement—they ask the tough questions that stretch us.
5. Ministry Isn’t a Solo Sport
Jesus didn’t do ministry alone. Paul had Barnabas and Timothy. Even the best leaders in history had mentors and guides. If these great leaders needed support, why would we assume we can do it alone?
I’ve had the privilege of coaching pastors and being coached myself. Every time, I walk away with a renewed sense of clarity, purpose, and direction. If you don’t have a coach, find one. If you do, lean in. Your leadership—and your church—will be better for it.
Who is speaking into your life? Who is helping you lead at your best?
